Hi MissRed! Thanks for asking! I'm happy to know that you're interested! It went well actually, and what was good was that there was a lot of open discussion between them and the readers! Yehey! Here is basically what happened:
Attendees: NBDB Secretariat: Executive Director GRACIELA M. CAYTON, Deputy Executive Director CAMILLE V. DELA ROSA, Janelle Flores, Debbie (sorry Debbie i didn't get your last name) and Paolo (sorry, no last name, too) Readers: Honey de Peralta,Tina Matanguihan, Tata Francisco, Gabi Francisco, Aaron Vincent, Bernice Go, and myself
Outline: I. Book Clubs Presentations II. Book Swapping on World Book Day - April 23 at Bonifacio High Street, III. Draft Guide on how to set-up a book club (by NBDB) IV. Open discussion on how to grow readership in the Philippines.
Summary I. Book Club Presentations. Each of the following book clubs shared and talked about their respective clubs, and their ideas on how to promote readership in the Philippines. - Ex-Libris - by Tata Francisco - Read Philippines - by me - Flips Flipping Pages - by Honey Peralta - Goodreads -TFG - by Tina Matanguihan
The presentation I did about Read Philippines was basically a brief outline of what RP is and what readers can do/are doing here. In terms of growing readership in the Philippines it's basically that we need to understand more about the Pinoy readers, get into their skins and have a deeper insight into what they want / looking for, and how can we make them read more. In line with this, we invited NBDB to use RP as a resource - post all their programs and events at RP and get in touch with the readers here, ask for their opinions, conduct polls, etc. I know that we as readers love for nothing more than for our opinions to be heard, so I'm counting on everyone to support and respond to the posts of NBDB if ever they will join and become active at RP.
II. Book Swapping on World Book Day - April 23 at Bonifacio High Street The NBDB is hosting World Book Day on April 23, the highlight of which is a BOOK SWAP from 1pm to 7pm. Each of the clubs are invited to send their representatives and set up their own book swap booths there! The only guidelines is that there should be no exchange of cash and that the books are wholesome. Textbooks are allowed iIt's up to us on how we want set the value of books to be swapped. I will make a separate post regarding this to those interested.
III. Guidelines on how to set-up a Book Club (NBDB) As per the NBDB, there are public school teachers who are passionate about reading and want to start a book club but need help. So the NBDB wants to create a short guide on how to set up a book club to help these teachers start one. It's meant basically for high school students. They showed us the draft to check and maybe add our own book club experiences into the guide.
IV. Open discussion on how to grow readership in the Philippines This was the interesting part because we got to openly ask questions and discuss ideas with the NBDB. Ms Ciela thanked us for accepting their invitation because they want to touch base with readers and the book clubs, and hope to make this a long term relationship. Their main purpose is to promote the book industry by promoting reading in the Philippines. In line with this they want their programs to be more strategic and effective and hope that this Kapihan will be the start of productive relationship with the book clubs.
If you have any questions on the other details please don't hesitate to post a reply or shoot me a PM!
