Its dark and cynical and there is a strong sense of melancholy in the characters to the point that you can say its too gloomy. Nobody is truly happy. There are no moments of levity. That is not to say that its not good. In fact, its very good but if you're the type of person who needs a book that is affirming, this is not the book for you. Its a lot different than LOTR with regards to treatment and theme. In LOTR, its basically good vs evil with good eventually winning always over evil no matter how hopeless it seems. In Song of Fire and Ice, the good doesn't always win. The wicked prospers. In fact, the line that separate between the two may not always be so clear. The "good" characters sometimes makes decisions that cause more harm than good and the "evil" characters sometimes are capable of selfless acts of compassion.
