Its dark and cynical and there is a strong sense of melancholy in the characters to the point that you can say its too gloomy. Nobody is truly happy. There are no moments of levity. That is not to say that its not good. In fact, its very good but if you're the type of person who needs a book that is affirming, this is not the book for you. Its a lot different than LOTR with regards to treatment and theme. In LOTR, its basically good vs evil with good eventually winning always over evil no matter how hopeless it seems. In Song of Fire and Ice, the good doesn't always win. The wicked prospers. In fact, the line that separate between the two may not always be so clear. The "good" characters sometimes makes decisions that cause more harm than good and the "evil" characters sometimes are capable of selfless acts of compassion.

Woah. I must agree with you here, jquin. :)

Actually, this series is one of my favorites. I mus admit I took an instant liking to it when i read the first book even though I haven't seen the series yet (which is what everyone is actually going crazy about). Yes, it is quite dark and cynical but I must admit that's what made it REALISTIC. The characters are so complex which made me love it even more. I do think everyone in the planet is as complex as the characters in this series. We all have our evil and dark sides. But what I've also noticed is that the characters in this series are and must be getting from somewhere. And that something is what we readers must discover, I guess. The joy of reading comes from discovering. Where are they coming from? Are they totally ruined and dark? That is the back story. And that is what we must discover. :)

The obvious difference between the two may be seen from "branch of fantasy" perspective. LOTR and The History of Middle Earth including Silmarillion are HIGH FANTASY, while Songs of Ice and Fire series on the other hand is LOW FANTASY. One world plays highly with magic and mythology, while the other world plays more with politics and intrigue. The historic Wars of the Roses inspired GRRM to write his series, while World War I, European folklore and Anglo Saxon mythology inspired Tolkien to write his Middle Earth.

I just started watching again the ROME series by HBO and there's a similarity with the current Game of Throne series regarding the adult themes. All fun just the same...

Hi Deathwalker,

I wouldn't call A Song of Ice and Fire as "Low Fantasy". "Low Fantasy" tends to be set in the real world; A Song of Ice and Fire is very much high fantasy, especially when you progress through the novels. A better description would be to describe A Song of Ice and Fire as political fantasy, with its focus on court intrigue, rather than the quest-type formula that Lord of the Rings follows. Other examples of political fantasy include Jacqueline Carey's Kushiel series, or the Empire series by Janny Wurts (& Raymond Feist).

(Tama ba ikaw nag recommend nito sa akin? hahhaha) Darn, Im having a big kick of short-term memory loss.
