Martial Law Remembered Anew

Anvil Publishing, Inc., the University of the Philippines National College of Public Administration and T’bak, Inc. will launch the book entitled Tibak Rising: Activism in the Days of Martial Law on July 21, Saturday, 4 p.m. at U.P. Diliman. Book editor Ferdinand C. Llanes writes that, “the work brings together distinct personal experiences of political activists in the time of Martial Law; and, these stories have been put together to remind society of the lessons of a turbulent past, the dark side of which continues to assert itself in the present.”

In his foreword, columnist and anthropologist Michael L. Tan describes the word Tibak as emanating from the word “aktibista.” “Tibak –the syllables of the word “aktibista” transposed in the style of slang popular among young people at that time –speaks of a rebellious time…The Tibak stories remind us there’s more to transformation than slogans and the grim and determined politics of the streets (or of the hills). We find friendships and camaraderie built even in detention, not just among the prisoners but with the soldiers. History books tend to gloss over the details of everyday life; life histories capture the warmth and color of these encounters. On a sad note, the stories also highlight the irony of events that unfolded later, of former bosom friends becoming bitter enemies, of paranoia turning comrade against comrade.”
