The Hedgewitch Queen by Lilith Saintcrow.

I've only read two books by by Lilith St.Crow before - the first two books of the Strange Angels series - and I loved them. I don't know why I haven't continued with the rest of the series. Wait. I know! I was waiting for the rest of the books to be published since, at that time, book 3 wasn't even out yet. I'll start that series again soon.

Anyway, The Hedgewitch Queen has that Study series by Maria V. Snyder vibe. The world, as we know it, is different. I mean Europe is geographically correct but different and... I'm still about an eighth through so no concrete opinion yet but I'm loving it so far.

I am currently halfway to The Bonehunters - Book Six of Malazan Book of the Fallen by Steven Erikson.

Six books deep, I am getting a clearer view of how humans have become the dominant race in most of the world. I also learned how powerful the Deragoth and the Dejim Nebral are. I also found out how technologically and magically advanced the First Empire was. And of course, how heartbreaking that some of the players had to fall.

By this book, Erikson has felt his stride and I can see that he has been pushing for more detailed war scenarios. His pacing has also improved and he doesn't create new characters as much. Now, he focuses on character development and disparaty, the latter of which has been sorely lacking in the first few novels.
