Here's some news I found. Woof: since you have a Kindle maybe you can tell us if this is something worthwhile

Kindle Cloud Reader: The latest from Amazon
Image

The Kindle Cloud Reader was announced by Amazon on Wednesday, the latest move from the online bookseller to own the e-reader market.

The Kindle Cloud Reader does just what it says: It allows users to read Kindle e-books that are stored in the cloud, rather than being downloaded, using a Web browser. It works with Google Chrome and Apple's Safari but is not yet available for Firefox, Windows or BlackBerry.

Kindle users will see a library of the books they have purchased or downloaded for free. Reading can be synced across devices so readers know exactly where they are in an e-book whether they're on the Kindle, their desktop or an iPad.

Although Amazon is calling its Cloud Reader an app, it isn't something you can buy in Apple's app store. In fact, after downloading it to your iPad or Apple laptop using the Safari Web browser, it allows you to go to Amazon's online Kindle store.

This allows Amazon to offer Kindle e-book customers using Apple products an alternative to its current in-app purchase option, which is subject to fees imposed by Apple. "To make it easy and seamless to discover new books, we've added an integrated, touch optimized store directly into Cloud Reader," said Dorothy Nicholls, director of Amazon Kindle, in a press release.

Are you a Kindle user? Will you use the Kindle Cloud Reader?

@bossjun - yep, that's basically Whispersync + cloud storage of all your eBooks. Whispersync has been around for a while and basically uses Amazon's server to place bookmarks on ebooks that you are reading on any internet enabled device using the Kindle ebook Reader app. The cloud service is really just the desktop version of the Kindle ebook Reader. Since each ebook is so small in size, any desktop browser can pull the entire book from the web in a manner of seconds (ok maybe minutes for some). The cloud app will preload the first few pages from your bookmark so you start reading almost immediately and will quietly download the rest (stored in a cache) without you noticing it - so that you can still read and finish the ebook even if you lose your net connection. I understand that collaborative (read "social") functions are also available, enabling readers to see each others' annotations and discussions.

The pieces that tie all these together is the application and the webserver. Any device with a kindle app that can be connected to the webserver will have synchronization across all platforms. So the built-in browser of the Kindle is not really an "experimental" feature. It is actually part of Amazon's insidious little plan to conquer the ebook space by enabling synchronization, storage and purchasing functions. Of course, shafting Apple is icing on the cake. :D

Really, publishers and bookstores should advertise about the advantages of real books, holding them in your hand, the smell of freshly printed paper....these things.

I'm reading The Brothers Karamazov on my ipod, and it's great and it's handy specially for when i'm waiting in a line or just bored and stuck somewhere. Still, nothing beats actually holding a book in your hand. Flipping the pages of a good book gets me far more excited than running my fingers along my ipod screen to "flick" to the next page. Now, I've forgotten what i'd read. Just not the same to me.
