Hi, everyone!

We are happy to announce that we're featuring PRIDE AND PREJUDICE as our BOOK OF THE MONTH this February. :) Here's a preview of this well-loved classic from Amazon.com.

When Elizabeth Bennet first meets eligible bachelor Fitzwilliam Darcy, she thinks him arrogant and conceited; he is indifferent to her good looks and lively mind. When she later discovers that Darcy has involved himself in the troubled relationship between his friend Bingley and her beloved sister Jane, she is determined to dislike him more than ever. In the sparkling comedy of manners that follows, Jane Austen shows the folly of judging by first impressions and superbly evokes the friendships, gossip and snobberies of provincial middle-class life.

Enjoy!
Ivy

Chapters 1 - 3

I just finished reading those chapters last night, accompanied by an audiobook, which is a first for me...

I like the humor of Mr. Bennet, the father. I can somewhat relate to what he does, acting so carefree, but in reality he really cares. Ms. Jane Austen presented him as family-man who really, not only thinks the welfare of his family, but also for his wife. Mrs. Bennet on the other hand, who will pass with high colors on the Chattering Order (Good Omens by Patchett/Gaiman), is a wife-mama-material, and just wanted a nice future for her children.

On the other side of the world, Mr. Bingley, a wealthy man, and Mr. Darcy a mysterious man, are still the apple of the eye of the Bennets along with the whole town.

I still don’t know who will fall in love with whom. How will the story unfold is now the big question.

The story is well written, and characters are well introduced, maybe that’s how Austen really wanted it as a whole. I can’t wait to continue reading the remaining chapters.
You guys, what part are you now…Kindly share what you think and ask questions, let’s keep this thread rolling…
:P

Pride and Prejudice is an obsession. The word “ardently” had established itself up my list of favourite words just because of the book. It is the most tattered item in my shelf because I have read and re-read and re-re-read it over and over. Definitely for hopeless romantics, but more importantly for great social and psychological thinkers.
I love her, I believe Austen always write more than just a novel, it is an observance and examination of the minds of people, of the story behind our actions and so on.  And there is almost always something endearing about her characters, I especially love Elizabeth – she’s just the right amount of in betweens. I love the movie too! Obsessed!!!!

Well said Ms. Katarina. Now, we've found someone who we can ask if there's something we can't understand. Do you mind ma'am?
Thanks

Hi Katrina, "it is an observance and examination of the minds of people, " well said! I really think that Austen has a deep insight about different kinds of people. I've always judged a book based on the depth of the characters, and Austen does this beautifully. It's great that she created all these just on her own, she's really the best of writers!

Hi Heldervert, I completely agree with you on what you said about Mrs. Bennett! For me, her best line in the entire novel is "No, my dear, you had better go on horseback, because it is likely to rain; and then you must stay all night." For me it captures Mrs. Bennett's entire essence! :D Have you reached this part yet? :-)

Lucky you if you're still clueless about who's going to fall in love with whom! I've seen the films many times over! :-D But reading the book is still what i've always wanted to do!
