If you have read books by Filipino authors, what is your advise to Pinoys to get them to read more books by Filipino authors?

Better looking books. Better marketing. Aside from being a good book, I think presentation counts a lot.

I agree with jquin3. Better covers and better marketing are things that the publishing industry needs to level up if they really want people to read more local authors. I think marketing is especially important, because it seems you hardly hear about newly released Philippine literature anywhere.

I think we Pinoys just need to try them! My friend said she was surprised by what she found!

I believe so. You'd really be surprised. After all, our Filipino authors are well known for being good short story writers.

i think the publishers must make their books more 'financially accessible.' I know it is hard to be a Filipino writer, but many books just have crazy prices. I'd rather go to Booksale and get myself a 10-peso copy of a Steinbeck book. And believe there are a lot of Filipino writers who write better than him.

Try not to look at them as just mere required reading in school (most often that's how we encounter them, instead of discovering them on our own). Spend a bit more time at the Filipiniana section and browse the Filipino-authored books to see anything that would resonate in you enough to buy them. I think they're worth their price tag though sometimes you'd think otherwise because the more affordable ones in paperback are printed in sad-looking newsprints. So yes, better presentation and marketing also.
