Memorable Quotes

Let's start a thread on our favourite quotes, words, phrases, or lines from a book or a poem which have one way or another made an impression on ourselves.

Sometimes fate is like a small sandstorm that keeps changing directions. You change direction but the sandstorm chases you. You turn again, but the storm adjusts. Over and over you play this out, like some ominous dance with death just before dawn. Why? Because this storm isn't something that blew in from far away, something that has nothing to do with you. This storm is you. Something inside of you. So all you can do is give in to it, step right inside the storm, closing your eyes and plugging up your ears so the sand doesn't get in, and walk through it, step by step. There's no sun there, no moon, no direction, no sense of time. Just fine white sand swirling up into the sky like pulverized bones. That's the kind of sandstorm you need to imagine. - Kafka on the Shore, Haruki Murakami

hi, MurakamiCat! fellow Murakami fan here :)

here's one quote i really liked from Fine Balance by Rohinton Mistry:

Losing, and losing again, is the very basis of the life process, till all we are left with is the bare essence of human existence.

Hi potatocrayon! It's my first time to hear about Rohinton Mistry (maybe because I don't read historical fiction that much). Looks interesting though.

Another one from The Magician King by Lev Grossman:

He'd known that adventures were supposed to be hard. He'd understood that he would have to go a long way and solve difficult problems and fight foes and be brave and whatever else. But this was hard in a way he hadn't counted on. You couldn't kill it with a sword or fix it with a spell. You couldn't fight it. You just had to endure it, and you didn't look good or noble or heroic doing it. You were just the guy people felt sorry for, that was all. It didn't make a good story--in fact he saw now that the stories had it all wrong, about what you got, and what you gave.

From Attachment by Rainbow Rowell

Nobody marries their first love. First love is just that. First. It's implied that something else will follow.

"I don’t know if you’ve ever held a secret so powerful that it could make someone you love stop caring for you in the blink of an eye.
If you ever find yourself possession of such a secret, you might be braver or more honest than I was. You might come right out with it at the first opportunity. Here it is. I think you have the right know this. Now I’ve told you everything. Do you still love me?
But with all due respect, I don’t think you’ll act that nobly. I bet you’ll do what I did: keep it to yourself in the safest hiding place there is- your own mind. Tuck it away for as long as possible and try to pretend it isn’t there. Pull it out and examine it in the dark of night, when you’re all alone, and then shove it back quickly."
