Romantic Characters for the Non-Romantic Writers

Romance had always been a secondary thing whenever I'm writing a novel or a short story. It's just I always find providing the romantic atmosphere difficult, and whenever I do it, it always appeared desperate sounding.

Then, I'm entering the realm of queer fiction. Gay relations had always been plagued with polygamous main characters, or broken protagonist - they said it made the whole character realistic - but I wanted to write about a happy romantic who finds love, gets love, loses love, and gains love back. The plot would thicken soon enough, but the characters are making it hard for me to visualize the story.

How do you make a romantic character again?

Ps. I'm bisexual, and yet I couldn't write it. There must be something wrong with me.
