Should we always finish the books we read?

So you love to read books, but do you always finish reading a book even if you don't like it? Do you think we should finish every book we start reading even though we'd rather throw it in its author's face?

or is it better stop reading so that we can stop wasting our time and find a better book to read?

marami kasi akong libro na binabasa at gustong basahin. minsan, despite being a bestseller, hindi ko type ang libro or pangit talaga ito. minsan naman, maganda lang sa simula ang libro. and then there are times na sa kalagitnaan gumaganda ang istorya. there's also a part of me na hindi makatulog hangga't hindi nalalaman ang ending, or sinasabing dapat irespeto ang libro at tapusin ang pagbabasa.

ano ba ang dapat gawin? :|

i think its only a question of when. some books we get better than others depending on our station in life. we may not finish it now but maybe at some point in our life this unfinished book may be clearer to us and maybe we'll appreaciate it more. take it at your own pace, in your own terms :)

I agree with @bagamundo....at your own pace and terms whether or not you'll end up liking the book. personally I tend to try to finish the book no matter how long it takes coz most of the time i want to know how it concluded :-)

@bagamundo: parang may libro nga akong naappreciate lang noong... hindi na ako masyadong bata XD ay, hindi pala yun libro, it was a poem. Desiderata. I think it still sucks as a poem, pero napakaganda ng message nito :) I'll just read at my own pace, no matter how erratic it is

@laila: yes, ako rin. basta nakakabasa ako ng story, I really want to know its ending. minsan kapag sobrang bagal ng story (white teeth; dance, dance, dance), nagii-struggle ako na silipin/wag silipin yung paragraphs sa last few pages ng book para malaman ang ending

...about reading at my own pace, depende siguro sa tao, may mahaba or maikli ang pasensya. sayang naman kung tumigil ka sa pagbabasa dahil na-bore ka kaagad. ang mangyayari niyan, palipat-lipat ka ng libro hanggang sa ang dami na pala nila. nalulunod ka na sa reading list mo. ganyan ako ngaun XD

I finish them no matter what. Kasi, you can't really tell if the book is awesome or not if hindi mo natapos. May ibang story kasi na medyo Question-mark ang beginning and then exciting pala xa in the long run. unless kung mga self-help books ang binabasa, you can always stop and resume anytime you want.

i had three books unfinished. One was a children`s book and i find way toooooo juvenile. I gave the book to my inaanak. The other one was (please dont hate me) the diary of anne frank. Di pa sya kaya ng powers ko. The last one was Atlantis by David Gibbins (i think).

As much as possible pinipilit ko ang sarili ko to just hang on sa book. Sayang din. And quite often when i reach one third of that book nagkakainteres din ako.

Great question..ive been wondering about that too. I think you have to finish them no matter what. But sometimes there are books that you just cant swallow...for those books i just make an exception to the rule.

id say, finish it, no matter what. i pause, but i dont stop. sometimes, i drag myself to finish it knowing if i ever pick it up again the next time, i will start all over again. so better get it done and get it over with.

This is quite a dilemma for me. I would read a book that is so interesting and so engaging, nonstop - only going on food and/or bathroom breaks. Some books are so good that I usually sleep in the morning because I so want to know what happens and read through the end.

There are book that not bad nor good either, interesting enough to continue but I won't sacrifice sleep for. Some books are set aside for a future time of reading but most of them are not picked up again.

There are some books that are cringe-worthy because of the shenanigans of the characters that they are the cause of various headdesks and facepalms. But curiously, I read them till the last page since out of sheer wanting to know the end.

However there are some books that are so awful, whether character-wise, plot-wise, development-wise, that I would be just one or two chapters in and I would close it and rant.

I believe it's not fair to judge a book unless I finished reading it. :)
