I keep seeing Terry Pratchett's name pop up a lot recently, and I'm curious about his books.
Can anyone recommend a book of his among others, or the best one to start with?

You might want to read the first book of the series (The Colour of Magic) to familiarize yourself with the universe of Discworld and the City of Ankh-Morpork. However, the first book was average, so you might want to search the Web for info instead. This is enough: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Discworld_(world)

The books have different protagonists. With the exception of the first two books, you can read the other books regardless of volume number. However, some of them feature the same protagonist, so it is better if you read the first book where that protagonist appears (example: read Going Postal first before Making Money. Both books are about Moist von Lipwig) This has the list of books in chronological order with protagonists: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Discworld

I'd recommend reading the books that feature Death because he's hilarious but insightful in his own way. Here's a list:
Mort (highly recommended)
Reaper Man
Soul Music
Hogfather (highly recommended)
Thief of Time

British humor rules. Have fun! :D

Reviving this post. I cannot recommend Good Omens more highly. It's a collaborative effort between Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett. As I understand, Gaiman is famous for his ability to paint fantastical worlds, creatures and heroes while Pratchett is more known for his sharp wit and humor (not to mention his uncanny ability to "time" his jokes right). I also recommend Reaper Man. It was a good read. :)

Ok wait, I was in National Bookstore this evening and I saw one of Pratchett's books, entitled Last Hero.
I could not see inside very well because it was sealed in plastic but some of the plastic had ripped and I was able to see the corners.
It looked like a comic book.
Are Pratchett's books like comic books? I didn't know that. I thought they were normal books, i.e. - no pictures.

They're usually text-only books, but some of them have been illustrated. I haven't read Last Hero, so I dunno why it's like a comic book.

It's a good place as any to get to know him (and Gaiman. xD that's awesomeX2 right there)

I do hope you come to enjoy his brand of story telling and wit as much as we do. :D
