They don't read as much, and whatever they read is dominated by entertainment.

I personally had this struggle with reading before. What I learned was, I just haven't found the right book for me. Most books I read before bored me because they're just too difficult to follow. But then I found authors that were easier to read (in terms of grammar) like Nicolas Sparks and other self help books. Now I enjoy reading more than I enjoy facebook :)

I believe if you want young members of your family to read, expose them to a lot more choices. The best book I've read are the ones I borrowed ;)

As a youth myself (I'm 17, btw), I can say reading has deteriorated amongst our generation. Just in case teenagers DO read books, they read the mainstream ones, like the one being turned into a movie and being constantly promoted by the media blahblah. They read them to get into the trend. Take The Hunger Games for example. It's been on the shelves since September 2008 but it only became famous when it was turned into a movie. It was the same thing with Twilight, Number Four and other 'popular' books.

I think the love for reading starts young. When children are exposed to books, it's more likely they'll love reading as they grow older. You rarely see an average Filipino parent reading a book. More than half of 'em would prefer to sit in front of a television instead, so the thing is, it's gonna be the same for the kids because they mirror what their parents do (unless the kids beg to differ, I don't think they're gonna love books if their parents didn't inculcate the value of reading in them).

I would say reading, not only amongst the youth, has been "deteriorating" because books have become a kind of luxury at this age, especially in a Third World country like the Philippines. One of the major problems is accessibility. How many public schools in the country do you think have well-organized libraries? We don't have enough public libraries either. When the majority of the population dont have access it is therefore difficult to encourage people to read. Add up to that the concept of time poverty. People who are not earning much would normally rather use their remaining time out of work to for other opportunities to earn. The same goes for the working youth, who would rather use their time after school hours to work.

Nevertheless, I am positive that the situation could be changed and that the public school system, especially our educators, holds the key to developing and encouraging the youth's passion for reading. :)
