I would like to read more about Philippine Mythology but I am lost. If anyone can recommend books I should buy regarding this topic, kindly comment the titles and authors here. Thanks! BTW, I'm new here. Just registered today.
I've got some ideas for you based on my own research - it might not be very helpful, though, if you're looking for something to *buy*, but here goes:
Maximo RAMOS: "Creatures of Philippine lower mythology"; "Filipino cultural patterns and values and their mythological dimensions"
Francisco R. DEMETRIO: "Myths and symbols, Philippines"
- These are super-old books, I don't think they're available for buying anywhere. They are by far the most valuable and extensive works on mythology I came across so far, though. I read them in the Filipinas Heritage Library in the Ayala museum, Manila (for P50 (student) or P100 (non-student) entrance fee, you can spend the whole day in the library and make photocopies.)
Resil B. MOJARES: "Isabelo's Archive (National Bookstore)"; "Waiting for Mariang Makiling" (Ateneo Press, you can order from their website)
- These are more about cultural studies and history, but they do have some really cool bits about mythology, folklore and prehispanic times.
Isabelo DE LOS REYES: "Ang diablo sa Filipinas ayon sa nasasabi sa mga casulatan luma sa Kastila" (with English translation, National Bookstore)
- A tiny little book, written in 1887 or thereabouts, mostly to make fun of Spanish friars, but it has some interesting mythological anecdotes.
Isabelo DE LOS REYES: "El folklore Filipino"
- Also written way back 19th century; I haven't read it yet, but it's been on my wishlist for a long time... It's been translated into English from the Spanish, National Bookstore lists it in their catalog as "for special order", or you can get it from kabayancentral.com if you can afford their prices.
The SUGIDANON (Epics of Panay) is available as e-book on Kobo, I think the 2nd book came out recently.
... and, if you don't mind fiction/comics, I'd recommend Budjette Tan and Kajo Baldisimo's "Trese" series - it covers everything from aswang to tikbalang to duendes and datus of war
