The Sandman is one of the few graphic novels ever to be on the New York Times Best Seller list, along with Watchmen and The Dark Knight Returns. Initially published as a monthly serial, The Sandman's main character is Dream, newly created by Gaiman. The comics quickly gained in popularity and DC comics began to reprint them in hardcover and trade paperback editions. Today it is Vertigo's best ever comic.
Just finished reading the series and I agree - this is one of the best graphic novels ever printed. Someone said that the universe is made of stories not atoms - the Sandman would attest to such a declaration. The stories contained in this graphic novel are superb (sometimes disturbing but extremely entertaining). I like Gaiman's use of 'real' historical figures (Shakespeare, Marco Polo, Emperor Norton etc.) but what I like the most is Gaiman's portrayal of Dreams sister, Death. For those of us who love fantasy, this is a good addition to our library.
