deathwalker wrote:Hello fellow bookworms! I would like to make a suggestion regarding this book-of-the-month discussions. First, I suggest that maybe, it's better to choose a specific theme each month before choosing the book. Anyone can suggest for a theme and vote, and majority wins. Since we already have the book for May, we can begin tallying votes for books in the next 7 months beginning next month, the month of June. So anyone can suggest 7 themes or more and of course, the corresponding book or books for each theme.
Here are my suggestions: (in no particular order)
FOREIGN BOOKS (Books authored by non-american)
any books by Italo Calvino
Battle Royale by Koushun Takami
any books by Murakami
any books by Umberto Eco
any books by Suzanne Collins
Phillip Pullman's The Golden Compass
Percy Jackson & the Olympians by Rick Riordan
Game of Thrones by GRRM
Word War Z by Max Brooks
The Stand by Stephen King
Abraham Lincoln, Vampire Hunter by Seth Grahame-Smith
The Time Travelers Wife by Audrey Niffenegger
Reamde by Neal Stephenson
Hyperion by Dan Simmons
The Yiddish Policemen's Union by Michael Chabon
Flatland by Edwin Abbott
Trese books by Budjette & KaJo
Elmer by Gerry Alanguilan
any books by Manix Abrera
Blink by Malcolm Gladwell
The Element by Ken Robinson
Ghost in the Wires by Kevin Mitnick
The latest book from Philippine Speculative Fiction Anthology
any books by Nick Joaquin/Quijano de Manila
any Bob Ong books
The Diary of Anne Frank
Candide by Voltaire
The Grapes of Wrath by Steinbeck
Heart Shaped Box by Joe Hill
Grendel by John Gardner
Song of Kali by Dan Simmons
The Manual of Detection by Jebediah Berry
The Maltese Falcon by Dashiel Hammett
what do you think?
deathwalker wrote:Hi wanda. Shadow of the Wind is on my TBR list so my book is ready. Anyone who's interested in the online discussion can actually suggest any theme or book they want. We just need to decide by voting which theme is best for June, July, and so on and the corresponding book for each theme/month. Of course, horror is probably appropriate for November, Philippine Books this coming June (for the June 12 ID celebration), banned books for September (to coincide with the international banned books week), etc...
We need more inputs and ideas for these, and maybe it's better to choose a book that is easily accessible from the local book shops.
So far, our official list is this:
2012 RP BOOK OF THE MONTH
APRIL - The Marriage Plot by Jeffrey Eugenides
MAY - Looking for Alaska by John Green
JUNE - (most probably a Philippine Novel)
SEPTEMBER - (banned book)
NOVEMBER - (horror)
DECEMBER - (xmas book/YA)

I think its a great way to choose the books! Maybe we should let ivy/thevinethatwrites know since she's the one in charge of the book of the month. Your list sounds interesting too! May i add Shadow of the Wind, please? It has great reviews, Though not sure which category this would fall under.
Hi ivy, what do you think about this? If you like it maybe we should already start voting for June
Heldervert wrote:This is a very good idea. Earlier i've been wonderin' how those books were chosen. Its nice that we have a poll lilke this.
For the month of June, for i'm here abroad, can you please suggest book that can be easily acquired or better of there is an available ebook format in amazon or somewhere.
For October, it's United Nations day. So foreign books??
also better if we include some classics.

Initially, I chose the books. I picked the critically acclaimed one by Pulitzer Prize winner Eugenides (The Marriage Plot) for April and an award winner for June (Looking for Alaska) to kick off the Book of the Month.
Thank you for the suggestions, too! We need input from you guys!
