This is the second Dean Koontz novel I've read so far. It's about an internet millionaire named Ryan Perry (who reminds me a lot of Zuckerberg) who was lucky enough to survive a heart transplant, only to be haunted physically by the donor of the heart that's beating in his chest. She's determined to get it back but he's determined to live at all costs and realizes his mistakes a bit too late... Quite fast paced and entertaining...it has a lot of loose ends but very forgivable.

after a long wait for this final book of the fey series...i was not disappointed...this was certainly for team Ash! the all knowing Grimalkin is still all kinds of awesome for me. Ash has come a long way and not only him but also for Puck and Ari. Despite difficult decisions and the ultimate sacrifice, i'm glad that after all that, a certain kind of closure and peace has come to each character.

I love the period setting of the story its in the 1800s victorian era since i am quite familiar reading this period setting. there are a lot of insightful things in this book about girls at that time with so little choices in life and then there is this supernatural opportunity that opens up those other choices giving them the freedom to be what they want to be and do the things they want to do and yet such beauty and power in life comes great responsibilities and when you become obsess and greedy it can corrupt you. Gemma Doyle the herione in this series is very much relatable to all girls at her age regardless of the era that she was born into, its about self discovery, friendship, family and even girl empowerment. The mystical events that surround Gemma's life just added to the allure of what the future holds for her with every choices she makes and boundaries she will push thru. I will soon be reading the sequel of this book Rebel Angels.

Soledad's Sister - by Butch Dalisay
Beautifully written novel about the lives of a collage of people, from Pinoys to Chinese. Makes a lot of references to Pinoy pop culture (people, places, personalizites, music.) But don't expect it to be a page-turning thriller like I thought it was. Shortlisted for The Man Asian Literary Prize, it's about Soledad, an OFW, who dies overseas. A policeman Walter Zamora is assigned to drive Soledad's sister Aurora from their hometown to the Ninoy Aquino International Airport to pick up the body. Just finished reading this book...Afraid to be Chinese by a local author Xin-Mei.






I was expecting it to be more about the the stigma on the Filipino-Chinese in the Phils like kidnappings but it is different. It's about the Tsinay and her issues growing up, including not having a birthday and inheriting slave girls to arranged marriages. However I was recently told a lot of the contents are not anymore true. I spoke with a few chinese ladies (2nd generation) who were born here but whose parents migrated from China and they said that slave girls are not true (at least not since the 2nd world war.) Then even if your birthday falls on a different date on the gregorian calendar every year, it is always celebrated unlike what is said in the story (bec the date on the lunar calendar is permanent.) And you are not forced to marry or give away your child to a childless sibling if you do not consent. However, the rest of the stories, like growing up in a private all-girls school, exchanging letters with boys, these I think were typical. Still, I think it's nice for someone to write about being a Tsinay.

despite being busy this christmas holiday, i'm glad i managed to finished reading the second book of the Gemma Doyle series...and so continues the mystical journey and struggle for power of Gemma..the power she is gifted with and the important choices she has to make. this victorian gothic story is just my cup of tea and i look forward to starting unto the final book of this series.
