What's the best tablet to read comics on?

I've been considering a lot of tablet to read digital comics on lately, especially webcomics. Can't seem to come to a reasonable conclusion as there aren't that many forums and discussions on it.

I'm considering the ipad, of course, but i'm thinking if it's really worth it, especially if all i'm really after is the ability to read comics on my couch rather than at my desktop.

Kindle fire seems pretty cheap and handy, though i wonder if its size is good enough to really enjoy the comics experience.

I don't know much about the Galaxy tablets or any other devices. Maybe you guys can help me out? :D

Hi Frans.

Don't look at the question in simple terms. It's been my experience that it's both a software and hardware question.

For example, a key question here is the format. What is the format of the comics you are going to purchase?

Are they Comixology comics? In that case, you'd need a Comixology App (available in both Android and iOS) but that's not available for the Kindle without jailbreaking the device. Edit: It's available for the Kindle Fire as an App.

Are they Kindle files? If so, you'll obviously need a Kindle device for a Kindle App on your respective device. As for whether they're readable depends on how they were made. For example, we've published several comics for the Amazon Kindle. A lot of them are broken into individual panels, so that they're visible and readable on the device. In the case of one comic, we experimented with the K8 format which rendered well on the Kindle Fire but not for the older devices (or the Apps). For some comics (not ours), some users have complained that the screen is too small to read the text (or it might suffer from the same backwards compatibility).

If they are done well (like our comics, plug plug), then the small screen shouldn't be a problem.

Are they PDF files? I'd recommend a large tablet like the iPad, the Galaxy Tab, or the Asus Transformer.

Are they CBR/CBZ files? I'd again recommend a large tablet with the appropriate App (try Cloud Reader).

Hi Charles,

Thanks for the suggestions. I'm leaning more towards the CBR/CBZ files as well as web browsing for webcomics. I've heard about apps that focus on individual panels. They actually seem pretty interesting, but I guess that for me getting a larger tablet is preferable. I'll definitely look into comparisons between the ones you mentioned.

Although, with it being my first time to hear about the Asus Transformer, it seems pretty impressive. And i'm seriously considering it especially now that it's capable of being turned into a netbook (which was something else I was hoping to invest in x_x) Hahaha!

Anyway, thanks for the suggestions! I'll keep them in mind while I canvas.

...am using the ipad ...

in terms of specs and capabilities, its far better than the rest...

pricey -- yes... try the Ipad 2 which is cheaper than the New Ipad.... specs is the same, only the resolution and camera were upgraded...

and as a salute to Steve Jobs, i wouldn't indulge myself in "stolen Tech" --> android..

Ummm, Apple has also stolen a lot of tech, whether its current operating system (OS X), or even arguably even its interface with iOS devices.
