try comic books turned into movies:

1. Dragon ball and DBZ - medyo mahaba... pero classic din to... many of the characters are from the Journey to the West (one of the Four Great Classical Novels of Chinese literature). The interesting part of this is that this comic book is very very famous among chinese, korean and japanese. They know the story quite well. Like Filipinos knowing the story of Darna and Captain Barbell. Also, the story is already finished. No need to wait for the next story. Dragon ball has 16 comic books and Dragon ball Z has 26.

2. Death Note: oks din ito.. i think they have 2 or 3 movies... 13 books lan ung buong comic book series..

3. The Priest: kakalabas lan nito recently. Korean ung author. On going pa ung series

You need to tell us first which GENRE you want to start.

Do you like history, parody, and memoirs? I recommend MAUS, American Splendor, Epileptic, Persepolis, Will Eisner's A Contract With God
International flavor? I recommend Herge's TINTIN adventures, loads of Manga (sobrang andami jan)
Adult theme? Tank Girl, The Invisibles, loads of Milo Manara collections via Metal Hurlant/ Heavy Metal Magazine, Sin City, Transmetropolitan
Fantasy & Mythology? Sandman, Tim Hunter & Books of Magic, Fables
Superhero? Watchmen, DK Year One, DK Returns, Daredevil Man w/o Fear
Local? Trese, Wasted, El Indio, Pugad Baboy, Kiko Machine, After Eden, Mythology Class, Andong Agimat

I started out with a pretty basic graphic novel. Blankets by Craig Thompson. Black and white, large panels, straight to the point. About 500 pages long but it was not much of a heavy read. I both had Blankets and Watchmen (by Allan Moore) at the same time and I must say that Watchmen was quite a heavy reading material for a first-timer. Apart from the story, it involves reading between the lines in order for you to actually "get the picture". Personally, I think Watchmen is somehow intermediate graphic novel already.
